Artist Sakuma Shozan
Title Six-line Calligraphy
Biography Sakuma Shozan(1811-1864) was a samurai and philosopher born in Shinshu (present-day Nagano Prefecture). His given name was Kunitada, and he was also known by the common name Keinosuke, and the courtesy names Shiteki and Shimei. His wife, Junko, was the younger sister of Katsu Kaishū. He studied under Sato Issai. Sakuma was sent to jail for his involvement in the attempted illegal overseas voyage by his student Yoshida Shoin. He was later assassinated in Kyoto by activists.
