Biography She was originally named Chiyo, and was also known by the haiku pseudonyms Chiyojo and Sōfū. Later in life, she received the Dharma name Sōen. She studied haiku poem under Kagami Shiko and painting under Ikarashi Shunmei and Sakaki Hyakusen. She is renowned as one of the most prominent female haijin (haiku poets) of the mid-Edo period. Her haiku collection includes ”Shikichou” and among others.
