Artist Sengai Gibon
Title Hotei with self-inscription
Biography Sengai Gibon (1750–1837) was a Rinzai Zen monk, born in Mino (present-day southern Gifu Prefecture). His courtesy name was Sengai, his priest title was Gibon, and he used Hyakudō, Kyohaku, and Amaka Oshō as his art names. He served as the 123rd chief priest of Shōfuku-ji in Hakata, the first Zen temple in Japan. Sengai studied under Gessen Zensui and was known for his playful, haiga-style ink paintings with spontaneous brushwork. Alongside Hakuin Ekaku, he is considered one of the masters of early modern Zen painting in Japan.
