Biography Suda Kokuta (1906-1990) was a Japanese Western style/self-taught painter born in Saitama Prefecture. He painted in ceaseless vigorous and unique style, influenced by the forerunner of abstract painting artist, Hasegawa Saburo (1906-1957)and later became associated with the Kokuga-kai artist group. He drew illustrations for the book ”Kaido-wo-yuku" by a well-known novelist, Shiba Ryotaro(1923-1996).In addition to painting, Suda was deeply engaged with calligraphy and ceramics, pursuits that informed the bold, gestural qualities of his work.A member of artist group, Kokuga-kai.
