Title Standing Buddha, 1928
Biography Takamura Koun(1852-1934) was a sculptor born in Edo (present Tokyo prefecture). Originally named Nakajima Mitsuzou. In 1863, he became a disciple of the Buddhist sculptor, Takamura Touun and was later adopted by Touun's elder sister. He taught at the sculpture department of Tokyo School of Fine Arts
after its founding in 1989. Recognized as the father of modern Japanese wooden sculpture. His eldest son was the poet and sculptor, Takamura Kotaro. Notable disciples include Yamazaki Chouun and Hirakushi Denchu.

  • incised on the reverse: “carved by Takamura Koun"
  • Bonji (Sanskrit seed syllable) inscriptions in ink on both the reverse and the front of the storage box
  • cracks to the reverse
  • formerly possessed by Yamamoto Yasusaburo
  • with wooden storage box signed by the artist
